Falcon names go to the polls

Ringed chicks

Ringed chicks

After nearly 300 nominations and some deliberations, six potential names have been picked to go to the polls.

As you will notice from our poll (at the top of this page), the six names are all female. This is because – as you may have guessed – we’ve been able to ascertain during the ringing yesterday that the peregrine falcon chicks are made up of two females and a male.

The male chick, as you will be aware from previous blogs, will be named Ernest in tribute to a Falconcam follower who sadly passed away last year.

So, we need you all to now vote for your favourite female name and the top two will be given to the remaining chicks. The deadline is 5pm on 30 May.

The names have been chosen by our Environment Team and are mostly in reference to inspirational people:

Lady HayGrace Marguerite Hay Drummond-Hay was a British journalist who was the first woman to travel around the world by air

IsabellaIsabella Bird was a traveller, explorer and writer

Amelia  – Amelia Earhart, an aviation pioneer and author, was the first female to fly across the Atlantic on her own

Katiyana – In Inuit language means ‘Night Snow’

Cecily – A female character from Oscar Wilde’s play The Importance of Being Earnest

Gwendolen – Another female character from The Importance of Being Earnest

Whatever your favourites are, we’d love you to vote for them.

In the meantime, to update Falconcam viewers, we also thought we’d share an exchange of correspondence we’ve had with former television presenter Tony Soper, who is the co-founder of the BBC’s natural history unit. In an email Tony was kind enough to tell us: “I watched your saga through to the end last year – had it on the favourites bar!  Looks like a good start this year, I wish you all a successful season.”

We’d also like to let you know that the bird ringing this year was very successful. The three chicks were all ringed by professionals from Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, causing minimal distress to the birds. If you’d like to read more about bird ringing, read Erin McDaid’s blog: The Importance of Bird Ringing.

And finally, we hope you enjoy the most recent video highlights from Falconcam.

Lady Hay and Amelia to join Earnest.

If there had been another boy, I definitely would have picked Jim Shaw.

I like the idea of explorers/aviators… but I also think it’s nice to have a common theme… So, in keeping with the Oscar Wilde – “Importance of Being Earnest” theme, Cecily and Gwendolen will get my votes.

I was correct. I only remarked to my sister first thing this morning that I thought there were two females and one male. I’ll be voting in the poll!

What are the rules of the poll? Can we vote as often as we like or only once, or once per day? I remember last year we could vote endlessly!

It would be nice to be able to vote for two names – that way if we want to stick with the Importance of Being Ernest theme we can. Otherwise one of the names on its own won’t make much sense. Thanks for letting us share in this story, and for having a say in choosing their names 🙂

Didn’t get much viewing time yesterday and only realised when I logged in just now that one of the chicks was wearing bling on it’s leg! Had a good idea that we have 2 females and 1 Ernest, and I love the names that have been shortlisted. I will now go away and consider my choices although it’s quite difficult as I like them all!

Well done NTU and NWT. 🙂

Question: Why do the Male and Female not sit with the chicks together?

    Like

  21. S says:

It is always nice to have a matching “set” of names, but it is not obligatory.

    I love Oscar Wilde,

but I would hate to see the other names of more deserving (and real!) people,
    ….like the great women mentioned….
overlooked, merely in favour of having the names “match”.

(Especially since Ernest was not really chosen due to the Oscar Wilde play,
but in honour of a former viewer. The play is not really the point).

I would vote for Lady Hay and Isabella Bird (I would be sure to include the “Bird” in her name!)

But if I may only vote for one female name, my money would be on “Isabella Bird”. 🙂

I don’t wish to be critical, god knows I wouldn’t know how to ring a falcon chick, but a fellow viewer pointed out to me that the chicks seem irritated by the rings, which I’ve never noticed in the past.

Thought it was worth pointing out, if any experts want to observe this for signs of trouble.

RE..pink feathers…its another craze that is springing up for the must have bride and groom…a whole new industry of having birds/pigeons/doves that are dyed with brightly coloured dye released at weddings….maybe it was one of those that the falcon had for lunch.

One of the girls is being quite vocal – must be nearly teatime! Mrs P (?) seems unconcerned – just standing on the ledge against the window sheltering from the rain. Little Ernest has managed to get into the corner and snuggle up with his other sister. Bless – what a horrible wet day for them. 😦

would it not be possible for another year to put a box in the nest so that they could go in and shelter from the rain as they have done on the CXH Peregrine nestbox?

  55. San says:

I logged on to see only one bedraggled chick struggling to find shelter. I was sure the other two had perished as there was no sign of them at all. However……eventully there was a glimpse of one and then thankfully, the remaining one. My heart literally sang such was the relief. The gully was full of water and it was pianful viewing watching them trying to keep dry. This poor family have endured so much and it must be so hard to resist intervention. But then we have to remember that they are wild and that they chose the site.
