The mother falcon in the nest just minutes after the egg was laid.
Calling all falcon lovers – we have a new arrival!Our first peregrine egg of the 2014 season was laid at around 12.30am on Sunday 16 March. This compares to our first eggs being laid on 14 March in 2012 and 21 March in 2013. We’re currently trying to dig out the footage of this week’s arrival for you, but in the meantime you might want to reminisce about when the first egg of the 2013 season was laid.
If those previous years are anything to go by, when one egg is laid two or three more invariably follow. The footage we got in 2012 of the second egg being laid was truly remarkable in terms of showing the act.
Keep watching online as you might catch the moment itself as another egg arrives. Over the last six years 20 chicks have successfully fledged from the nest on top of the NTU Newton building and here’s hoping we can add a few more to that number this year.

I have been glued to the webcam for goodness knows how long now and it was lovely finally to be able to turn on my laptop and see the first egg had been laid. Can’t wait to see how many more we get 🙂

I was only thinking about the peregrines this morning and decided to check the nest. I was really happy to see Mrs P sitting there but I did not realise she was sitting on her first egg until I received your notification. I shall be watching closely from now on. I have watched Mr & Mrs P come winter and summer and worried about their welfare now there is an egg to worry about. 😦
I am not very practical when it comes to the welfare of animals I just want them to be in tip top condition and not suffer.

I’ve been watching for the arrival of falcons to the ledge. Saw Mom setting there late Saturday night, figured it was almost time. Checked again yesterday afternoon, and there was the egg with Mom hovering over it. Keeping fingers crossed for eggs and the hatching of healthy young ones. Thanks for the post.

The birds don’t start sitting on the eggs properly until a full clutch has been laid. The one that’s in the next now won’t come to any harm even if left there for periods of time.

I know it sounds silly to some but I have never stopped looking at them at all. Every morning when I get up I check them out and all through the day. I even check out what the weather is going to be like for them. Sad I know.

The best Peregrine webcam in the country – my compliments to the organisers. First thing I do when I “switch on”, is not check my emails but the Nottingham Uny webcam. On Sunday, 16th March, I checked the site at about 12.30 and the bird was on the nest scape, kept checking during the day and at 17.10 she was stood at the side of the nest scrape revealing an egg. As I watched she returned to cover the egg. Brilliant ! As far as I know none of the other urban Peregrines have laid yet.

According to the Derby blog the peregrines at Charing Cross hospital have started to lay, no eggs at Derby yet or Sheffield, have seen both birds at Nottingham today so don’t worry !! Roughly how long is it between each egg, can we expect another one soon ??

peregrines will keep mating,long after eggs are laid,part of the bonding thing,she wont sit on eggs properly till all laid she is just keeping em “ticking over ” till 4th egg is laid,she wont go far away from eggs we may not be able to see her but she is there,do not worry about weather its not important very hardy birds

Hi, don’t quote me on this but I think I read somewhere that they eat small stones to act almost like a sandpaper to remove the slimed fatty layer that can build up in their cro

Sorry I didn’t finish. I meant slimey. And to finish what I was saying….. In their crop. This is because of the what they eat can contain levels of fat. They don’t need grit like seed eating birds to aid in digestion as they eat mainly meat. I hope this is correct.

Am I dreaming, or dreaming? Just checked nest activity for first time after seeing two eggs last night, and now, don’t see any eggs at all? Could they be pushed closer to edge of nest, out of camera range? Or, have the disappeared altogether? Male or female currentl on ledge. I hope eggs are just hidden from camera view.

The Sheffield Mrs P looks as though she is not quite sure what to do about the egg, she is standing over it alot as opposed to doing any incubating, could be an inexperienced bird but I know that full incubation doesn’t start until they have the whole clutch, looking forward to another egg at Nottingham soon

You are so very right. Last year I worried myself to bits when they got too near the edge as I was afraid they would fall. Then when it rained a lot and there was a lot of water in front of their nest box. Of course who can forget the snow.

Just had chance to see the three eggs. Yesterday, every time I looked Mrs P was safely snuggled down over them so couldn’t see a thing! She’s a very conscientious parent – and so is Mr P. He’s been standing guard over Mrs P for a lot of the time.

Hi, just watching your webcam and see one of the birds, the one on the ledge keeps stretching its neck up in the air as if trying to dislodge something in its throat. It is not the same as when they are emptying their crop. I wonder if it is ok? It has been doing this for quite a while now.

Mrs P has a much longer curved tip to her beak than Mr P, it makes this pair easier to tell apart than any other pair I know of! It really is a wicked looking bill! 🙂 Hope that helps Lynn!

I decided to donate this year based on eggs laid – getting more expensive by the day but I don’t care. Having said that five eggs would be a lot of hard work so four seems like a good sized family. I noticed the youngster’s were left “Home Alone” for quite a while this afternoon
if its happens again I’m afraid I’m going to have to report them to the NSPCC!

LOL the Home Alone comment. Can anyone please tell me when the babes will start noshing at the fiood themselves, so they are not completely reliant on the parents. I still worry about the small one who seems to be pushed and shoved every such way.

Tuesday 6.15 i have watched 3 feeds today and the smallest one hasnt received a morsel. I cant bear it.

They’ve all just had a good feed, from about 2.30pm, including the youngest one. I’m breathing a great sigh of relief. Well done Mum.

I’m besotted with all animals geebee7 and always suffer myself when they suffer. I’m sure you know what I mean. I become a blubbering idiot when seeing an animal in distress.

What a feast set before the kids this morning, being as it’s May Day. 06:23 Dad arrives with a pigeon. 06:24 Mum arrives with a duck. Both feeding the family together – a lovely sight. Interestingly, Dad flew off at 06:33, leaving the pigeon carcase behind. Mum, took off taking the remains of the duck with her. She returned shortly afterwards. Made my day!

I see dad is on duty but unlike mum he can’t cover the babies with his body and they are sitting out in the cold.

Did anyone see the 4.30pm (Fri) feed when Dad was flying off with the carcass and the baby one (who hadnt been fed) was hanging off the meat. I thought he was going to take the chick with the carcass. Was the chick hurt when Dad used his mighty claw to dislodge him ?????

Just before 5pm today, April 2nd, I witnessed something not good with the Peregrine chicks. Parent arrived with food and fed all three of the bigger chicks. Little one begging and being knocked over by the stronger chicks and got nothing. Eventually when he got to the front still begging with his little foot actually on the prey. Parent didn’t feed him but prepared to fly off with remains of prey. Little chick had his claw caught in the prey and was lifted into the air before parent saw him, and shook the prey till he fell into the scrape. He landed about a foot from the three other chicks in a huddle. He tried to move toward them but couldn’t, so stayed where he was. Parent returned, ignored baby and went to brood the other chicks with her back to smallest chick on the scrape.. Small chick managed to reach her tail but she was wriggling to get comfortable and kept knocking little chick with her wings. He stayed outside the brood. Parent then turned around and saw little chick and dragged him under her, at last. He was probably in shock, cold and hungry so I hope and pray he makes it and gets a good feed next time.

6.20 pm Another feed, this time the smallest chick got a good feed and looked none the worse for his adventure. Phew, that’s a relief!

Had a bit of a panic attack earlier on. The tiny baby was away from his brothers and sisters and mum was sitting on them. He was trying to get over to them but mum kept moving round. He was leaning against her wing with no luck. She suddenly realised he was there and shunted him with her beak back under her to be with the others. What a worry.

Its 3 in the morning I just looked in before I went to bed and saw chicks in the nest ALONE! chirping then I saw mum or dad come back to sit on them
phew I will be able to sleep now

Well I am glad it is not raining otherwise the babies would be soaking wet. Dad is with them but not sitting over them, the babies are all huddled together trying to keep warm. I know dad isn’t as big as mum but he could at least make an effort.
