Exploration and mischievousness

The falcon chicks appear to be going through their ‘teenage’ phase, with them hopping in and around the nest, stealing food and chasing each other around! Ernest also learns how to flap his wings. It’s fantastic to watch, keep your eyes glued to the cams!

This video was filmed on Thursday 30 May 2013.

It’s really good watching him running up and down the ledge flapping his wing from the street too, mesmerising.

  3. Hello Peregrine people

Would you please put my mind at rest and tell me what is along the shelf ? Is it a sleeping falcon – because each time I look, it seems to have changed shape. I thought it was the remains of a pigeon this morning, but now I’m not so sure. It’s been there so long that I wondered if all the chicks (can we still call them that) are OK ?

Many thanks and thank you for this wonderful viewing experience too

      Hi everyone,
We think it is one of our falcons. Obviously it doesn’t look very well although it has moved and appears to be breathing so hopefully it will recover. Unfortunately we can do nothing but sit tight and watch. Our friends at the Notts Wildlife Trust are going to have a look on the cameras too.
      Thanks.

This just in from the Wildlife Trust…..

The chick has been lying on the ledge for some time and whilst we hope it is just sleeping off a heavy meal we will be keeping a close eye on it over the next couple of hours. There is a possibility that it may be struggling – but fingers crossed that its OK.

I was also wondering when are they no longer considered ‘chicks’?

I didn’t witness the little one not looking so well but I’m so glad it turned out to be OK. Thank you to NTU and the Notts Wildlife Trust for their concern and for keeping the viewers updated. I’d have been worried silly if I’d been watching at the time!

I have also been very concerned this morning, as this bird has been lying in an unusual position and its breathing is very heavy. Hopefully it will recover and all our minds will be at rest and we can continue with our work.

Something caught the youngsters attention at 11:41 and they looked up and seemed quite alert, so hopefully he/she will be ok.

I had the same problem George, you need to download an App called Penguin from iTunes App Store , it’s an official Web Browser , there is free trial version or a £1:99 full version. It allows flash player to work and you can view the webcams perfectly, I use it all the time now.

There is an adult tearing a pigeon apart on the ledge at 4.15pm but I do not recognise the area in the background. Is there another camera somewhere else on Newton building?

Hey Geoff, that camera is the mobile (as opposed th the static one) that usually looks out over the ledge behind the nest box and they also can turn it around to view the other side of the ledge that continues down the building in front of the nest bo and sometimes they spin it around (like when the young ones were exploring under the camera in the middle of the ledge, just a few hops down from the nest box) Hope that helps:)

these birds are disgusting, just look at what they are doing to to the pigeons, mainly racing pigeons and all other small birds, they should be culled not encouraged to breed!!

This is one of the best webcams I have seen and I have enjoyed watching Ernie and his sisters hatching and growing up (so quickly!). It is a pity that the blog is not updated on a daily basis (just a paragraph to keep us informed as to what is happening) for those of us who are unable to view the webcam continuously.

After last year’s sad losses of the three chicks it has been marvellous to see this years brood develop so well, with the parents doing an amazing job in feeding the youngsters. It has been a privilege to see the birds both on this site and in the flesh. We all wish the birds well, and thank you NTU.

We think that the Peregrines will be featured on tonight’s BBC Springwatch. Tune in from 8pm on BBC 2!!
Sorry to those of you outside the UK, I don’t think you will be able to see the programme. (BBC licence fee rules) but we’ll find out if we can get the segment put up on the blog somehow…

The bird that’s on the ledge now, I think it’s one of the chicks, is his leg ok? He’s walking strange, the leg with the ring on it……hope it’s nothing.

I expressed concern a few blog posts ago, just after the falcons were ringed, that they seemed a bit distressed by the rings….I mean no offense, everyone at The Trusts and Trent do a great job, and I am sure they know what they are doing. But I’ve never seen a chick pick at a ring, so much.

Then, in just the last blog post, I noted that one of the chicks was almost acting like his foot was caught on something.

Hope all is well with them.

I’ve also commented previously on one of the birds worrying at the ring – I’m sure we’re not all imagining it but I’m pretty sure it’s too late for anyone to actually check. I wonder if the experts read any of our comments as, between us all, these birds are watched constantly and we may see things that they miss.

As Sheena said, it is probably too late for anyone to check whether there is a problem, but is it just one of the chicks that appears/appeared to be having problems with the ring? If so, do we know which one? And would it be possible for anyone to check it over at all?

Went to Newton Building yesterday about 4pm to have a little look just as an adult flew in with a kill and looked as if it must have been giving it to one of the chicks, but out of my view. The other adult was at the very top of the building and one youngster on the ledge above the nest ledge. After a few minutes I heard a screech overhead and the third young one flew in towards the ledge, didn’t land at first but swooped round in a circle above me and then flew in to land next to its sibling on the upper ledge. It was wonderful to see one of them flying as have missed their flights on the cam, I felt really lucky. Hope to make it to one of the live raptor watch events. Thanks NTU and Notts Wildlife Trust for all your work, it really is appreciated by all us avid viewers!
ps I actually squealed when I saw ‘our’ birds on Springwatch tonight!

If you can manage to stand in the street outside NTU then you can see the chicks exercising their wings whilst flying around the Eon building/ Police Station. It’s amazing to watch.
